Description

The Beef Bowl is a versatile and satisfying dish with plenty of room for creativity. Feel free to customize your ground beef rice bowl to your taste preferences and dietary needs.

Ingredients
  • 1 cup jasmine rice
  • 1/2 lb ground beef
  • 1 red onion (finely sliced)
  • 1 cucumber
  • 1 carrot
  • 1 clove garlic (minced)
  • 1 inch raw ginger (grated)
  • 1 baby bok choy
  • 1 tbsp white vinegar
  • 1 tbsp hoisin sauce
  • Salt and Pepper
  • Toppings (optional)
  • Sesame seeds
  • Soy & sesame mayo
Instructions
  1. Heat a 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a medium-size pot, over high heat. Add the ginger, cook for 1 minute. Add 1 1/2 cups of water the rice, season with salt, and cook covered with a lid for 10-12 minutes. Let rest for another 10 minutes without opening the lid.

  2. In a small bowl mix the white vinegar with 1 tablespoon of water and 1 teaspoon sugar. Add the finely sliced onion. Set aside.

  3. Grate the carrot. Cut the bok choy to  half-inch pieces, and the cucumber to half moons. 

  4. In a large pan heat up a tablespoon of olive oil. Cook the minced garlic for 1 minute. Add the ground beef. Cook until browned. 

  5. Add the carrot and bok choy. Cook for 2-3 minutes and add the hoisin sauce. Cook for 1 more minute.

  6. Build your bowl. Start with the rice, top with the beef, cucumber and pickled red onion. Sprinkle with sesame seeds, and drizzle with soy mayo.

Tips
  • Season the ground beef with salt, pepper, and any other desired seasonings. You can also add minced garlic and ginger for extra flavor.
  • Opt for lean ground beef (usually 90% lean or higher) to minimize excess fat and grease in your dish.
  • Sautéing aromatics like garlic in a bit of oil until they become translucent and fragrant provides a flavorful base for your dish.
  • Customize your beef bowl with garnishes like sliced green onions, pickled ginger, nori (seaweed), sesame seeds, or a sprinkle of shichimi togarashi (Japanese seven-spice blend) for added flavor and texture.
  • Taste your beef mixture as you go along and adjust the seasoning to achieve a well-balanced combination of salty, sweet, and savory flavors.
  • While the classic beef rice bowl is a favorite, you can also experiment with different toppings and variations like "Gyudon" (thinly sliced beef bowl) or "Buta-don" (pork rice bowl) for variety.
  • Feel free to add vegetables like steamed broccoli, sautéed mushrooms, or sliced bell peppers to enhance the nutritional value and flavor of your beef rice bowl.
